Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased mobility in the joints. It can affect people of all ages and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide.

The condition occurs when the cartilage that cushions the joints wears down over time or when the immune system mistakenly attacks joint tissues, leading to inflammation and damage. Arthritis can affect any joint in the body, but it most commonly impacts the knees, hips, hands, and spine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Arthritis?
  • Arthritis is a broad term encompassing conditions that cause joint pain and inflammation, with over 100 different types.

  • Common symptoms include joint pain, stiffness (especially in the morning or after inactivity), swelling, and tenderness.

Treatment options include medications (pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs), physical therapy, lifestyle modifications (exercise, weight management), and in some cases, surgery.

Can arthritis travel around the body?
  • In Migratory Arthritis, the pain spreads from one joint and begins to impact another.

Some people with arthritis swear that nightshade vegetables — such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers — cause their arthritis to flare. While there aren’t any studies to support a link between arthritis pain and most nightshades, tomatoes may be an exception. That’s because they raise levels of uric acid.

  • To ease the pain of an arthritis flare, hot and cold compresses can help.
